Business Description

Evertas, incorporated in 2017 as BlockRe in Chicago and rebranded in 2020, is the first company purpose-built exclusively for cryptocurrency risk transfer, writing policies for digital-asset custodians, Bitcoin miners, exchange operators, and AI infrastructure operators.

The company's underwriting authority flows through Lloyd's of London, where Evertas became a coverholder in early 2022, writing on behalf of Arch Insurance International, the Lloyd's syndicate that sponsored its application and remains its primary capacity partner. That relationship supports single-policy limits that Evertas expanded in June 2023 to $420 million for crime coverage, specifically protecting custodians and exchanges against private-key theft authorizing on-chain transactions. Mining-hardware property coverage reaches $200 million per location, technology errors-and-omissions protection goes up to $10 million, and business interruption coverage is available alongside physical damage policies for mining facilities.

Evertas deepened its mining-specific capabilities in July 2023 by acquiring Bitsure, a specialist mining insurer launched in 2021 that had bound its first policy in June 2022 and grown to cover an estimated 6% of global Bitcoin mining capacity by the time of the deal. The acquisition transferred Bitsure co-founder Thomas Shewchuck to Evertas as Head of Underwriting and brought regulatory compliance lead Sarah Leon across as well. The combined entity's mining policy-writing authority increased to $200 million per location, twenty times the $5 million per-location ceiling Bitsure had operated under independently.

Funding has come from crypto-native institutional investors. In December 2022, Evertas closed a $14 million Series A led by Polychain Capital to expand underwriting capacity and develop new product lines. Co-founder J. Gdanski serves as CEO; co-founder Raymond Zenkich holds the President title. In June 2024, Nick Selby was appointed Head of European Underwriting, extending the company's geographic footprint.

Beyond Lloyd's, Evertas has secured a five-year capacity commitment from Accelerant, making it the only crypto insurer simultaneously backed by both Lloyd's of London and the Accelerant Risk Exchange. That dual-capacity structure supports underwriting across custody operations, mining hardware and facilities, blockchain startups, token sales, wallet providers, payment processors, NFT marketplaces, and mining hardware manufacturers: a breadth assembled through eight years of dedicated crypto insurance origination and reinforced by the 2023 acquisition of Bitsure, the sector's first pure-play Bitcoin mining insurer.
